In case you hadn't noticed, corporate America is back. Drastic cost-cutting helped companies to dress up their bottom lines in recent quarters. Now, it appears the gains are being driven by stronger sales, a direct result of pent-up demand.
Sam Stovall/Standard & Poor's: I think what we're finding is that a lot of consumers are just getting very tired of this recession. They're getting very tired of denying themselves the ability to go out and buy new outfits, new consumer goods.
The dramatic turnaround is evident in several companies that were operating at a loss during the same period a year ago.
Sam Stovall:
We're seeing an increase in both foreign and domestic markets. The other day Caterpillar reported an improvement in their full year earnings estimates, indicating that they're seeing most of the growth coming from overseas.
Caterpillar isn't alone in delivering positive outlooks. Ford also did an about-face in reporting more than $2 billion profit, announcing plans to boost production. The growth in consumer spending and the stock market may not continue at their current pace. But the fact that corporations are raising their earnings and sales outlooks clearly show the first quarter was no mirage.
